James Beard Award-winning Chef Michel Nischan and Arcadia Farms Executive Director Pamela Hess featured in this week’s episode discussing food as medicine

Today, renowned chef and television personality Spike Mendelsohn, in partnership with Food Policy Action, released the fourth episode of Plate of the Union — a new podcast that helps connect the dots between what politicians cook up in Congress and what we cook up at home.

“All across America, we look to our representatives in Congress to govern and make difficult decisions. Many of those decisions, whether we realize it or not, make a real difference when it comes to the food we’re consuming,” says host Spike Mendelsohn. “Through Plate of the Union, we’re exploring hunger, nutrition, food deserts, humanitarian food aid, urban farming, you name it. We’ll answer questions like, why does a tomato cost more than a package of cookies at a gas station? How come we still have food and agriculture laws from the 1930’s? And lastly, who are the political power-players affecting these critical issues? We will cover all of the fun, serious, and crazy things you never knew you needed to know about food and our food system.”

“Many things can divide us, but food has the unique power to bring people together, to bridge divides, to spark conversations – and to change the world,” says José Andrés. “I was honored to join Food Policy Action and my friend Spike for this project to talk about the issues that touch our lives in so many ways, and I think we both agree that food can be and should be a bipartisan issue.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the House of Representatives passed its version of the Farm Bill (H.R. 2) by only two votes. “This bill, from its inception through today’s passage, has been a hot mess for everyone except big-ag farm operations,” said Food Policy Action Executive Director Monica Mills. “The bill that passed today cuts SNAP benefits for hungry families and children, the protections that ensure poisons are kept out of the food on our plates, and funding for local and regional farm programs. House members made these cuts to create additional loopholes for wealthy corporate farmers. This is just plain wrong.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the House of Representatives passed its version of the Farm Bill (H.R. 2) by only two votes. “This bill, from its inception through today’s passage, has been a hot mess for everyone except big-ag farm operations,” said Food Policy Action Executive Director Monica Mills. “The bill that passed today cuts SNAP benefits for hungry families and children, the protections that ensure poisons are kept out of the food on our plates, and funding for local and regional farm programs. House members made these cuts to create additional loopholes for wealthy corporate farmers. This is just plain wrong.”

Mills added, “We are now saddled with a bill that will take food out of the mouths of hungry children and pour billions of taxpayer dollars into the overflowing bank accounts of big-ag farm operations. This is unconscionable. We look now to the Senate for a common-sense farm bill that balances the needs of all Americans.”

Food Policy Action will include this vote in its seventh annual Food Policy Action Scorecard available in October 2018.

WASHINGTON – Ahead of the Senate Agriculture Committee’s markup of its version of the farm bill tomorrow, Food Policy Action-Education Fund (FPA-EF) urged members of the panel to protect the vital nutrition program that helps more than 40 million struggling Americans feed themselves and their families.

“The farm bill is really a food bill for millions of hardworking Americans who struggle to have enough food to put on the table for themselves and their children,” said FPA-EF Executive Director Monica Mills. “Members of the Senate Agriculture Committee have worked in a bipartisan fashion to provide program integrity and offer common-sense employee training programs, including public-private partnership opportunities. We are watching to make sure the committee continues to protect access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that helps roughly one in four children in the U.S. get enough to eat.”

FPA-EF’s priorities for the 2018 Farm Bill – in addition to protecting the nutrition assistance title from cuts or additional onerous work requirements – includes shielding conservation programs from further cuts in funding, and bolstering local food and farming initiatives.

“Pollution from agricultural runoff is the leading cause of water contamination coming out of the faucets of rural American homes,” Mills said. “We want the Senate to use this opportunity to help farmers become better stewards of the land by strengthening the bill’s conservation programs.”

The House version of the farm bill failed to garner enough votes to pass last month. It sought to remove roughly 2 million Americans from SNAP, cut nearly $1 billion from conservation programs, and zero out funding for local farmers market initiatives and programs to help farmers transition to organic.

“The House farm bill was unconscionable—it would have given more loopholes to Big Ag operations at the expense of hungry children. Now, the Senate has the opportunity to benefit all Americans, not just corporate farm operations,” Mills added. “The interests of hungry people, all of us who demand clean water, and family farmers should be the Senate’s top priorities as it begins to markup the bill.”

On May 8-9th, 2018, Food Policy Action (FPA) is mobilizing stakeholders from across the United States to voice their united opposition to the draft 2018 Farm Bill released by the House Agriculture Committee.

Advocates have a narrow window in which to convince House members that supporting a Farm Bill that cuts support for SNAP, small farmers, and the working class is not only irresponsible but will lose them support at the ballot box, says FPA executive director Monica Mills. “We are already doing a dismal job providing support for new, young, and small farmers, and this bill is going to be incredibly harmful to rural economies if it eliminates what programs we do have. And the changes to SNAP feel like we’re waging war on the poor,” she says.

Broad-based opposition to the draft Farm Bill is mounting, with more than 350 organizations and industry groups joining an opposition letter. FPA is working to bolster the effort by bringing constituents themselves to the halls of Washington, D.C. to put faces to each critical line item in the omnibus, trillion-dollar bill.
