California’s Farmworker Population Feels the Pain of Unbalanced Policies

Oakland, CA – Plate of the Union coalition member and Director of HEAL Food Alliance, Navina Khanna released the following statement about the growing conversation around our nation’s food and farm policies in this year election season.

“Ahead of the California primary next week, Plate of the Union has been pleased to see the presidential candidates talking about food and farm policies. California knows first hand how out of balance our food system is. We grow half of the nation’s produce, and we’re home to one third of the nation’s farmworkers, whose low wages makes them and other food workers 50% more likely to rely on government assistance such as food stamps than workers in other industries. Food and farming issues not only impact the health of our economy but also our families and our children,” said Navina Khanna, Director of HEAL Food Alliance and Plate of the Union coalition member.

“That’s why Plate of the Union is pushing presidential candidates to make these issues more prominent not only in the lead up to the California primary, but throughout the election season, and into the start of the next administration. Our next president has a responsibility to take on these issues and prioritize new food and farm policies that will help bolster our economy, improve our food system and drive down alarming health concerns like hunger, the growing rate of type-2 diabetes and the decreased life expectancy for our kids. The cost of inaction is too great for our families and our country.”
