Food Policy Action Statement on Pompeo GMO State Preemption Bill

April 14, 2014, Washington, DC — Food Policy Action urges Congress not to support the so-called ‘Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act’ introduced by Congressman Mike Pompeo last week in the House of Representatives.

Food Policy Action may negatively score co-sponsorship of H.R. 4432 in the 2014 National Food Policy Scorecard.

Full text of the letter to Congress is below.

***************************************
Dear Member of Congress,

Yesterday the so-called ‘Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act’ was introduced in the House. This bill would pre-empt states from requiring labeling of genetically engineered food, and override bills in more than two dozen states that would require food made with GE crops to be labeled. This bill has been more accurately dubbed the ‘Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act.

Food Policy Action may negatively score co-sponsorship of H.R. 4432 in the 2014 National Food Policy Scorecard.

Americans want the right to know what is in their food, and with 64 nations already requiring labeling including Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and the European Union, this bill risks moving the U.S. even further backwards.

Food Policy Action is urging Members not to co-sponsor H.R. 4432.
